Rotated Lines and A NEW FOUND PITFALL
|
This one is a little bit obscure- but I love it when I find a pitfall in
the programming of a CAD system.
A customer of mine was using EMS for a drafting project to
assist him in building a round ring 42" ID and 46" OD from a very
special wood he had recovered. Basically, the 'ring' is going to be
built of 7 sections, because the wood pieces aren't large enough.
No problem, just build the inner 42" and outer 46" rings, and then
draw a line from the center and then copy and rotate the line for
each section. I did that, but when I double checked each section
I found that the angle wasn't correct. What went Wrong?
I get it, it must be a rounding error based on the fact that EMS
only does angles to the second decimal place. That is probably
enough for most angular work, but I had a stacking error that
multiplied each iteration. Bummer.
Here is the math in case you want to try it yourself. 360
degrees divided by 7 equals 51.428571 First I tried 51.43. No
good. Next 51.428571. Nope. The way I got it to work correctly
with proper rounding- Let EMS do the math.
Type into the angle box the '360/7' and hit enter. There it is
folks. Simple. Only took me a few hours to figure that one out.
Don't forget it- it may save you from missing lunch, or worse-
Dinner ;)
NEXT TIME- CTM Comments to Machinist. Sometimes it is the
best way to get across your design intent. See you then.
But wait... There is MORE

We also offer a great solution to your first part. We can convert the EMS parts to SOLIDS for
translation into Rapid Prototypes. What are Rapid Prototypes? Click here and find out!!!
See how SpodaCo can save you TIME and MONEY by building quickly and efficiently a Rapid Prototype of
your part, then you will be comfortable sending an order of hundreds or possibly thousands of parts to
eMachineShop.
