Tips about "Support Material" and how it
effects building parts using the FDM process.
Place your mouse on pictures to the right to see how the Dimension printer builds
'support material'. Depicted is two types of parts, with two alternative positions, and this
will show how 'Support Material" affects the finished part. This material needs to be
cleaned and removed from the models, some is impossible to get at. When viewing the
Mouse over picture, the red symbolizes the 'part' in that orientation, and the 'Blue'
symbolizes the support material.

Quoting - READ BELOW -
SpodaCo can save you $50.00 in TEN MINUTES!
A few days ago, a customer called to request a quote. SpodaCo makes customer
service our First Priority. The customer explained that he had ‘joined’ two parts in
hopes that it would save money, the theory used was 'one' part would save money
as opposed to two. It did the opposite. Due to the configuration of the two parts, he
was able to separate them. This gave us the option of positioning them differently in
the 3D printer, and this decreased run time. Basically, when you do a FDM model,
and the part has an overhang or I refer to it as “shadow area”, the area requires
support material during the build process. This means, extra time laying the support
material adds more cost for the support material. Separating the two parts,
requiring less support material. Runtime savings = $ Savings.
How does that help you?
Most Rapid Prototype service bureaus have an “instant quote” devices on their
websites. This is somewhat inaccurate, and they state that is is only an estimate
and will review the part for optimization. We have considered placing an ‘instant
quote’ for the SpodaCo website, but why give out inaccurate quotes then review
them later? This wastes your time and our time.
Why am I telling you this?
At this point you are telling yourself, yep, I got it, they have a flashy instant quote
tool, that but SpodaCo has customer service. Instead of sending a file, you get to
talk to a real person! So what? What does that have to do with the estimate? I
really don’t see the advantage. Even after they had reviewed it for optimization,
nothing would have changed. WHY? Because they put their money into making
your experience automated with as little human contact as possible, and in the
process they are getting you to do part of their job. This equates to no change.
This leads to the whole job being flawed due to configuration. They don’t know that
the parts can be separated. What is not having an estimating tool helping with
this? How can SpodaCo help? With a short conversation, SpodaCo can help you
save money with sharing a little insight about the RP plans.
